Oct 5: Stitching Stories: Sashiko & Boro-Inspired Textile Collage with River
Discover the beauty, philosophy, and craft of traditional Japanese textile arts. Explore sashiko stitching and Boro-inspired textile collage. Rooted in centuries-old practices of mending and mindfulness, these techniques celebrate sustainability, and imperfection.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of sashiko—a decorative and functional running stitch originally used to reinforce and repair clothing—while exploring the layered, patchwork aesthetic of Boro, a Japanese folk textile tradition dating back to the Edo Period, that embraces mending and the reuse of cherished cloth.
Through guided instruction and creative experimentation, students will:
- Learn core sashiko patterns and techniques, including transfer methods and stitching tips.
- Explore the history and cultural context behind sashiko and boro.
- Design and assemble a boro-style textile collage using fabric scraps and hand-stitching.
Open to all skill levels. No prior sewing experience necessary—just a love for textiles, storytelling through stitch, and a curiosity about traditional craft.
Materials provided. Feel free to bring personal fabric scraps for a meaningful, customized collage.
Registration closes the Wednesday before class.
There are multiple price points, as this class is sliding-scale, and includes all supplies. Please choose the option that best suits what you can afford right now.
